Do I need a GP referral to attend? No, a GP referral is only needed if you want to access the Medicare rebate scheme. Medicare allows you to claim up to 10 sessions in a calendar year (temporarily increased to 20 until 31 December 2022) The current rebate (how much you will get back) is $79.05 per session.
-
What is the cost of each session?I charge a standard rate of $190 per session. If you are between 12-25yo, I charge a standard rate of $180 per session Each session accounts for 90 minutes of my time. It covers: · up to 75min of in person consulting time · follow-up care co-ordination with relevant services e.g GP · treatment planning and review · case notes If you are experiencing financial difficulties or on low-income, we can discuss the costs and frequency of sessions to facilitate your recovery journey - its important to me that you are not under financial duress whilst receiving support.

Medicare rebates – How does it work?If you have a Mental Health Care Plan referral from your GP, psychiatrist or pediatrician, you are entitled to 10 individual counselling sessions in a calendar year (January – December). Your referring doctor will assess your progress with you after the first six sessions and can then apply for another four. Until 31 December 2022, the number of sessions you can claim back has been increased from 10 to 20. If you experiencing an eating disorder, you can claim up to 40 sessions under your Mental Health Care Plan. Your referring doctor will review your progress with you after every 10 session to enable further rebates.

How is an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker different from other disciplines? For example, a psychologist, occupational therapist or mental health nurse?Accredited Mental Health Social Workers are registered registered providers with Medicare Australia. They have been assessed by the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) as having specialist mental health expertise. Much like psychologists, occupational therapists and mental health nurses, they can all provide "Focussed Psychological Strategies" such as cognitive behavioral therapy. The difference between the disciplines lies in how they are trained, what perspective they bring and how much rebate you get back from Medicare. I would like to think that social workers bring a big picture, non-blaming, systemic perspective on whats happening. Want to know more? Please have a read about me in the about section, and contact me if you have any questions! The best way to know your therapist if often to chat to the person directly.

My mental health issue isn't listed in your practice area...That is because I didnt want to overwhelm the frontpage of the website. I have lots of experience across drug and alcohol, anger management, eating disorders and parenting among others. I am happy to explore your needs with a chat. Please email me on kelvin.mui@ttcounselling.com.au or call/SMS me on 0466075401

I have a referral to see someone at another practice: can I use it to see you?Yes but only if you haven’t used the referral at another practice. If you choose to see me but have not been referred by your GP, I will write to your GP advising them you have elected to see me instead of the original practice after our first session. This will link your original GP referral to me and enable you to continue access with the Medicare’s rebate. Unfortunately, if you have seen a private provider elsewhere, for even one session, then you’ll need to go back to your GP to get a new referral.

I am a professional, I would like to refer someone, how do I refer? What feedback will I receive? If you are a GP, the first step is to formulate a Mental Health Treatment Plan for your patient. The patient is eligible for a rebate fee from Medicare to complete this plan. Please check with Medicare for the billing item number to activate any referral (or see here). Please send any referral letters to kelvin.mui@ttcounselling.com.au. Alternatively your patient can contact me directly with a referral letter. If you would like to make a direct referral without a mental health care plan, please email me or contact me directly to discuss. What feedback will I receive? After the first couple of sessions with your patient, I will write back with a letter outlining my impression, formulation and treatment plan. At 6 weeks, I will write again to review with an update on his/her progress, with recommendations for future management. Depending on circumstances, I can provide more frequent or less frequent feedback. For example, someone with a eating disorder may require more care co-ordination. I am always available via my email or work number on 0466075401 if you wish to contact me.

Counselling is expensive! Why?Across the health care sector, the amount being reimbursed through Medicare is not enough to cover the costs of providing a quality health service. GP clinics have reduced or all together stopped bulk-billing services. The current rate helps me to provide a quality service to you. The fees covers: · up to 75min of in person consulting time · follow-up care co-ordination with relevant services e.g GP · treatment planning and review · case notes To try and strike a balance between access and quality of care, we can discuss: - Spacing out the frequency of sessions (if appropriate) ; you generally want to start off high intensity then tapering as you feel better) - Reducing the standard rate as you recover ; generally the hardest work is in the early-mid part of therapy. I also note a discounted rate of $180 for 12-25 yos.
